BARF organ meats for cats – essential for a species-appropriate diet
In a species-appropriate raw diet for cats, organ meats play a central role. They provide important vitamins, minerals and amino acids that cats need not only for healthy growth, but also for maintaining their essential bodily functions. The amino acid taurine, which is vital for cats, is found in particularly high concentrations in organ meats – one of the main reasons why they are indispensable in every BARF meal plan.
Why cats absolutely need organ meats
Cats are strict carnivores and rely on animal-based components to obtain all essential nutrients. While muscle meat primarily provides energy, organ meats are a natural source of vitamins A, D, E and K, as well as minerals such as iron, zinc, selenium and copper. Organ meats such as liver, heart, kidney, spleen and lung should therefore be included on the menu regularly.
The right selection and combination make the difference
Not all organ meats deliver the same nutrients. Liver, for example, is particularly rich in vitamin A and should therefore be fed in moderation, as cats are unable to excrete this fat-soluble vitamin. Heart is often underestimated due to its muscular structure, but it is a valuable source of taurine. Kidney and spleen provide trace elements such as iron and selenium, while lung is low in calories but rich in minerals. A varied combination of different organ meats ensures that your cat receives all nutrients in the ideal ratio.
Chicken organ meats – easy to digest and highly palatable
Organ meats from chicken are especially well tolerated by sensitive cats. They are considered easy to digest and are often very well accepted. Chicken organ meats such as heart, liver or stomach are also a good choice for a gentle transition to BARF or for more sensitive animals. However, always ensure the right balance to avoid over- or undersupply of specific vitamins.
How to feed organ meats correctly
Since cats can react sensitively to excessive amounts of organ meats (e.g. with soft stool), it is advisable to distribute the recommended weekly amount evenly across several days. If your cat is hesitant at first, you can lightly blanch, puree or mix organ meats with the usual food. What is important is that organ meats are not omitted permanently – they are indispensable for a balanced feline diet.
If your cat refuses organ meats: what to do?
If your cat does not accept certain organ meats at all, you can supply individual nutrients through high-quality supplements such as cod liver oil (for vitamins A and D), seaweed meal (for iodine), blood (for iron) or brewer’s yeast (for copper and B vitamins). However, a well-planned BARF diet should ideally rely on natural components. Completely replacing organ meats with supplements is often difficult in practice, as cats would likely reject meals made from too many powders and oils. If uncertainties remain or your cat permanently refuses organ meats, we recommend consulting a professional nutritionist.
