Offal
BARF Offal for Dogs: Nutrient-Rich Ingredients for a Balanced Diet
Offal for dogs is an essential part of the BARF diet and provides valuable vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Alongside muscle meat, it is one of the most important components in the bowl, as it contains nutrients that are not found in other types of meat in the same concentration. Whether chicken offal for dogs or beef offal – it should make up about 15% of the animal-based food portion to ensure optimal nutrient supply.
Why is BARF offal so important for dogs?
Offal is a true nutrient powerhouse and contains essential vitamins, important minerals and trace elements, as well as healthy fatty acids and amino acids. Since each type of offal provides different nutrients, feeding a variety is key to ensuring your dog receives complete nutritional coverage.
Which types of BARF offal for dogs are there?
The most common types of offal for dogs include:
- Liver: Rich in vitamin A, D, K1, iron, and folic acid – should make up around 30–35% of the offal portion.
- Heart: Often debated whether it counts as muscle meat or offal. Anatomically considered offal, it provides plenty of protein, fat, and taurine.
- Kidney: Contains many vitamins, as well as selenium, iron, and potassium.
- Lung: Very low in fat and rich in iron and selenium.
- Spleen: Especially high in iron – a valuable ingredient in a BARF plan.
Chicken offal for dogs, such as liver, heart, and gizzard, is also a popular option, especially for sensitive dogs or as an alternative to beef offal.
How to feed offal correctly
Offal should make up about 15% of the animal-based portion of the BARF diet to ensure a balanced and species-appropriate nutritional supply. Since some dogs react sensitively to larger amounts, it is advisable not to feed the entire weekly ration in one sitting, but rather distribute it over several days. This is easier on the digestive system and allows the body to absorb the nutrients more effectively.
Some dogs can be picky when it comes to the taste or texture of offal. If your dog does not eat it right away, there are different ways to make it more appealing. A tried-and-tested method is to briefly blanch the offal with hot water or puree it and mix it into the rest of the food. This way, it can be incorporated more subtly into the meal.
For especially easy feeding, we offer a ready-made BARF offal mix from beef that contains an ideal ratio of liver, heart, kidney, lung, and spleen. This ensures that your dog receives all essential nutrients without you having to combine the individual components yourself.
What if your dog doesn’t like offal?
If your dog refuses certain types of offal or cannot tolerate them, natural supplements can help:
- Vitamin A & D: Alternatively via cod liver oil
- Selenium: Can be supplemented through Brazil nuts or coconut flakes
- Iodine: Found in high concentrations in seaweed meal
- Copper & B vitamins: Can be added via brewer’s yeast
If your dog refuses offal altogether, providing alternative nutrients becomes more complex. In this case, it is advisable to consult a professional nutrition expert to prevent any deficiencies.
