Vegetables & fruit for cats – plant-based additions for a balanced BARF diet
Even though cats are true carnivores, small amounts of selected plant-based ingredients can be a useful addition to a BARF diet. High-quality vegetables for cats provide important fibre, vitamins and phytonutrients that mainly support digestion. However, the choice of ingredients and preparation are crucial, since not everything that is suitable for dogs is also well tolerated by cats.
Can cats eat fruit? – With moderation and caution
The question “Can cats eat fruit?” can be answered with a limited yes: some fruits, such as apples, berries or bananas, are allowed in very small amounts and provide antioxidants and vitamins. However, many types of fruit contain fructose, which cats neither need nor can process well. Therefore, fruit for cats should always be given only in small quantities – ideally no more than 5% of the total BARF ration. Grapes, raisins, citrus fruits, avocados or stone fruits with pits are strictly off-limits.
Vegetables as a source of fibre for digestion
Even though cats cover their nutritional needs primarily through animal products, vegetables for cats can make a valuable contribution to intestinal health. Pureed carrots, zucchini or pumpkin contain indigestible fibres that stimulate the intestines, bind hairballs and help with natural cleansing. Especially for indoor cats or those slightly overweight, small amounts of plant matter can help increase satiety without adding unnecessary calories.
The right preparation – gentle and appropriate
To allow cats to absorb plant nutrients, vegetables and fruit must be chopped, steamed or pureed before feeding. That’s why at eBarf we offer frozen vegetable mixes that are already optimally prepared and can be mixed directly into the food. This provides a practical, safe way to supplement your cat’s BARF meals – without unnecessary additives or time-consuming preparation.
How much fruit and vegetables can cats tolerate?
In a BARF diet for cats, the plant-based portion should generally not exceed 5% of the total food. As a guideline: 95% animal components such as meat, organs and bones, complemented by a small plant-based share. Within this portion, vegetables should clearly predominate – fruit should only be offered occasionally, not as a regular part of the diet.
Conclusion: Plant-based supplements – in moderation
When used correctly, vegetables for cats can support digestion and overall health. Fruit, if used at all, should be given only in very small and well-tolerated amounts. Our finely pureed frozen mixes make it easy to provide your cat with plant nutrients gently and appropriately – ideal for a balanced, species-appropriate BARF diet.
