The eBARF website should be as accessible as possible for everyone – regardless of their technical or physical requirements. Our goal is to continuously improve digital inclusion and present content in a way that is understandable and accessible to people with impairments.
Status of Accessibility
The website is partially accessible. Full accessibility has not yet been achieved but remains our aim.
As part of a targeted optimization process, we used the PopeTech (WAVE) tool to test eight sample subpages and implemented concrete measures based on the barriers found. We particularly improved the following points:
- Contrast: Colors and text were revised in many places to make them more readable for people with visual impairments. However, some borderline cases still exist.
- ARIA roles and labels: Added roles and labels for screen readers – even though this was not yet fully possible in certain areas for technical or structural reasons.
- Keyboard usability: Many interactive elements were adapted so they can be used without a mouse. Achieving 100 % consistency across all site sections is technically complex and not yet complete.
- Redundant content: Duplicate or confusing content such as link or alt text was reduced where sensible and technically feasible.
- Structural optimizations: Headings, form labels, and semantic structures were improved in many places.
- Accessibility statement: This dedicated CMS page was created to document the status transparently.
Thanks to these measures, the PopeTech/WAVE score was increased from 4.2 to 8.1.
Existing Limitations
Despite the improvements, limitations remain, especially in the following areas:
- Contrast values in exceptional cases (e.g., icons or third-party content)
- More complex ARIA logic in dynamic components
- Incomplete keyboard usability in certain interactive modules
- Missing field groups (fieldset, legend) in more complex form areas
- Remaining redundancies where reduction would limit functionality or usability for specific target groups
Full accessibility is not always entirely possible due to technical and content constraints – however, we continually work to identify and reduce further barriers.
