Muscle Meat in BARF Nutrition

Muscle meat plays a central role in BARF nutrition for dogs, a concept based on mimicking the natural diet of wolves. Muscle meat is the main source of protein and provides many essential nutrients such as amino acids and minerals. Dog food with muscle meat not only contributes to physical well-being but also promotes healthy digestion, a strong immune system, shiny fur, healthy skin, and robust muscles.

Important for a balanced BARF diet is to combine muscle meat with other raw components such as offal, bones, vegetables and fruits, and essential supplements. This ensures that your dog receives all necessary nutrients and enjoys a complete diet that meets its needs.

In addition to the high protein content, fresh muscle meat contains other important nutrients that your dog can utilize effectively due to its high bioavailability. Vitamins such as B vitamins and minerals like iron, zinc, and magnesium strengthen the immune system and support cognitive functions in your dog. Healthy fatty acids contribute to the maintenance of skin and coat health. Additionally, muscle meat in BARF promotes better digestion and can reduce the risk of allergies and intolerances, as it is free from artificial additives and preservatives.

The muscle meat is suitable for dogs of all sizes and ages; even puppies and young dogs can benefit from this high-quality meat as part of BARF feeding.

Beef is a particularly popular choice as it is relatively lean yet rich in essential nutrients. Poultry is also very popular and lean. Chicken meat, in particular, is very easy to digest and is often used as diet food or gentle nutrition, as it is well tolerated even by dogs with sensitive stomachs. Horse meat, on the other hand, is ideal for allergy sufferers and stands out with its hearty aroma, which appeals to many dogs.

Muscle Meat for Dogs & Meaningful Additions

Muscle meat rations should always be supplemented with a portion of fat. Generally, the fat content of muscle meat is not in the desired range of 15–25%. For this reason, it is necessary to add fat in the form of, for example, beef fat or chicken fat. This is the only way your dog can get the necessary energy and important amino acids in sufficient quantities, preparing it for all your adventures together.

Supplementing with beef blood or poultry blood powder is also recommended, as muscle meat contains relatively little blood and therefore less iron. This is due to the requirement for livestock in Germany to be bled, which is not a quality defect.
By adding fat and blood, muscle meat for dogs can be easily and quickly enriched and further enhanced in terms of nutrient content. This combination also promises your dog plenty of flavor in its bowl. You can easily determine the necessary amount of fat for your dog's meals using our fat calculator.

What Counts as Muscle Meat in BARF?

Muscle meat refers to the meat surrounding the skeleton of the animal. Depending on which part of the animal the meat comes from, it has different nutrient compositions and names:

• Stitch meat
• Head meat
• Crown meat
• Throat meat
• Flank meat
Muzzle meat
• Tendon meat
• Tongue
• Lips
Poultry gizzards
• Diaphragm
Neck meat
Fish

All these terms refer to muscle meat suitable for BARFing. Ultimately, muscle meat is simply normal meat, like what we buy for human consumption from the butcher, though sometimes from different parts of the animal.

Fish as an Alternative to Muscle Meat

In addition to typical muscle meats from beef, horse, poultry, and others, our BARF shop also offers various fish options. Fish provides a tasty and healthy variety to your dog's BARF diet and can be fed once a week as an ideal alternative to muscle meat. This way, your dog gets plenty of vitamin D and essential fatty acids. In BARF, fish is considered muscle meat.
