Description
Important Calcium Source for a Balanced Diet
Bones are, like muscle meat and offal, an essential component of a balanced BARF diet. They contain a lot of calcium, which is crucial for the health of bones and teeth. Adequate calcium intake is important during growth and at every other life stage of your dog to keep bones, teeth, and joints strong and healthy.
Meaty Bones for Better Digestion
When barfing, meaty bones are preferred – that is, bones that are surrounded by a certain amount of meat. This promotes stomach acid production and facilitates the digestion of the bones. The meat also acts as a natural protection that supports the easy swallowing and digesting of bone parts.
Raw Meaty Bones: Natural Chewing Fun for Dogs
If your dog has no experience with feeding bones, you should gradually introduce them into the BARF meal plan and initially offer only small amounts. Soft bones, such as chicken carcasses, chicken and duck necks, or veal breast bones, are ideal for beginners, as they are not too hard and prevent hurried swallowing due to their size. However, not only beginners but also experienced dogs love the regular enjoyment of raw, meaty bones that provide them with natural chewing fun.

Feeding recommendation
For a balanced BARF diet for adult healthy dogs, we recommend a feeding composition of 80 % animal and 20 % plant-based components. The animal portion should be divided into 50 % muscle meat, 20 % tripe and omasum, 15 % offal, and 15 % raw meaty bones (RMB). The plant-based portion usually consists of 75 % vegetables and 25 % fruit.
Tip: To accurately calculate your dog's BARF rations, you can use our free BARF calculator. Simply enter your dog's data and receive balanced daily and weekly rations within seconds.
For adult healthy cats, the animal portion of BARF rations should be 95 %, consisting of approximately 65 % muscle meat, heart, fat, and blood, as well as 15 % raw meaty bones and offal. The remaining 5 % consists of fiber-rich vegetables such as carrots or pumpkin.
We recommend dividing the total food amount into at least two meals per day and supplementing with essential nutrients such as omega-3-6-9 oil or salmon oil, as well as seaweed meal and, if necessary, cod liver oil.
All our BARF products should be stored at -18 °C in the freezer and thawed in the refrigerator for approx. 12 hours before feeding, either without packaging or with sufficient air holes. Serve at room temperature.
The BARF pyramid
BARF pyramid for dogs
The BARF pyramid shown alongside illustrates how BARF meals can be structured for a healthy, adult dog. As a general rule, rations consist of 80 % animal and 20 % plant-based components, although not all elements need to be fed every single day. Feeding sick dogs or those with intolerances may look completely different. Therefore, the illustration should be seen as a general guideline only. Our nutrition experts are happy to help you with any questions about the right BARF ration for your four-legged friend.
