Milk thistle for dogs – Traditionally valued plant
Milk thistle has been valued for centuries and is increasingly used in modern animal nutrition today. Especially in BARF feeding or individually composed rations, many dog owners use milk thistle as a natural supplement.
Veterinary studies on milk thistle
The seeds of milk thistle contain natural plant compounds such as silymarin as well as other secondary plant substances. The active compound complex silymarin is intensively studied in scientific literature. Studies with dogs indicate that supplementation with silymarin may be associated with changes in certain liver function values. For example, a veterinary study observed a significant decrease in certain liver enzymes after administration of silybin, the main component of silymarin.

Feeding recommendation
Feeding Recommendation per Day:
Dogs up to 10 kg: 0.2 - 0.5 g
Dogs 10 - 20 kg: 0.5 - 1 g
Dogs over 20 kg: 1 - 4 g
Cats: 0.2 g
We recommend feeding milk thistle as part of a 4-8 week treatment or over a longer period, as needed. The simultaneous use of a vitamin B-complex and folic acid can enhance the effect of milk thistle.
In cases of acute symptoms or poisoning (only in consultation with a veterinarian, of course!), the amount can be doubled. Milk thistle should be gradually introduced and tapered off.
You can simply mix the milk thistle powder into the rest of the food.
