Reconstruction of a Natural Prey Animal
The Franken-Prey feeding method roughly aims to feed dogs/cats with a complete prey animal. It is the feeding method that comes closest to the original, natural diet of cats and dogs. This model attempts to reconstruct a natural prey animal by adhering to the proportional shares of meat, organs, bones, and other components, or by feeding a whole prey animal, including feathers or fur (“Whole Prey”).
This type of feeding requires that the cat/dog consumes all necessary components and tolerates them well; otherwise, essential nutrients cannot be absorbed in sufficient quantities. A varied diet is absolutely necessary here.
The Franken-Prey feeding method also helps support natural dental hygiene. By tearing apart the prey or large chunks, the natural way of eating is simulated as closely as possible, making it easier to remove tartar and deposits.
Supplementing with Nutritional Additives
Alternatively, nutritional supplements can be used in Franken-Prey feeding to provide various vitamins, minerals, and trace elements like Vitamin E, taurine, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. This is especially useful if your pet, for example, does not eat organs or other important components. The addition of supplements prevents the risk of deficiencies.
It is not necessary to balance every single meal; instead, a targeted feeding plan ensures that deficiencies are avoided over a period of approximately 4 weeks. Unlike BARF, the Franken-Prey method does not include any fruit or vegetables in the diet.
